Integrating New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into Con Edison’s System Expansion Investments

Various Distributed Energy Resources (DER) like energy storage, solar power and smart appliances promise to change the shape of the current electric distribution model and the utilities that provide electric service. New York State’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) outlines a plan to integrate DER into the utility’s planning and operations, spur new business models and ultimately develop the electric marketplace of the future. Con Edison is at the leading edge of this charge with its Brooklyn Queens Demand Side Management (BQDM) program which utilizes non-wires alternatives (NWA) to defer traditional utility solutions and save money for all customers. This presentation will review the changing landscape of the New York marketplace under REV and describe the economics evaluation of NWA versus tradition utility investments and how that will change the utility business model.

Speaker Bio
Damian Sciano is Director of Distributed Resource Integration at Con Edison where he oversees the company’s evolving Distributed System Implementation Plan (DSIP ) and Distributed Service Platform (DSP) designed to integrate distributed energy renewables like solar energy into the traditional electric distribution business. Damian has over 25 years of utility experience working as a developer of cogeneration projects for Trigen Energy as well as working in large power plants, electrical engineering and, most recently, as Senior System Operator at Con Edison responsible for operating the bulk electric system. Damian is a professional engineer and holds a doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering from NYU-Polytechnic School of Engineering and an MBA in Finance from Baruch College.
