Robert E. Curry, Jr. Commissioner of the New York State Public Service Commission


Please join the New York Association for Energy Economics when we welcome Robert E. Curry, Jr. Commissioner of the New York State Public Service Commission to our monthly NYAEE Luncheon on February 23rd. Mr. Curry will discuss Indian Point, the current status of shale gas and the potential impact of shale gas on New York State's electric and gas needs as well as the latest issues in front the Public Service Commission including CHP.

Robert E. Curry, Jr. was appointed a Commissioner of the New York State Public Service Commission in 2006 for a term that runs through February 1, 2012. Secretary Steven Chu named him to the Electricity Advisory Committee for the US Department of Energy in 2010 where he is a member of the Transmission and Smart Grid Subcommittees. A member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, he is Vice-Chair of its LNG Partnership with the Department of Energy. For the Middle Atlantic Conference of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, he is Co-Chair of its Committee on Natural Gas. In addition, at Columbia University, Mr. Curry is a frequent speaker on energy issues and a Member of the Board of Advisors of its law school’s Center on Corporate Governance. He also participates in the New York City Energy Planning Board, the Harvard Electricity Policy Group and other power industry and regulatory activities.

Lunch fee is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.  Registration closes the evening before, after which there are no refunds.  Walk-ins are welcome ($10 surcharge at door). *PLEASE NOTE: Though we accept walk-ins, we ask that everyone pre-register so that we may provide the facility with an accurate headcount estimate.

Daniel Einbund, VP and co-founder of the New York Nuclear Corporation gave a candid view of the nuclear industry, its history, and future challenges. The luncheon was memorable for the substantial audience participation with Daniel responding to a variety of well informed questions ranging from the security of the US uranium supply to the need for government financial support to underwrite new nuclear plant investment.

Jonathan Schrag, Executive Director of  the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) discussed the success and challenges facing RGGI. RGGI is the first mandatory, market-based effort in the United States to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Ten Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states will cap and then reduce CO2 emissions from the power sector 10% by 2018.

On May 28th, Liam Baker (US PowerGen) and Carlos Villaba (Con Edison) presented on electric capacity markets. Part tutorial, part analysis of the recent proposal for a forward capacity market in New York State, Carlos and Liam, gave their perspectives on an issue which their professional positions requires that they often take opposite sides.

On April 23rd, Mark Brownstein (Environmental Defense Fund) gave an excellent analysis of the potential paths for Federal Climate and Energy Policy. This included the need for action, as well as political and practical challenges of passing and implementing policy.

On March 26th, 2009, Jim Gallagher, SVP for Energy Policy, New York City Economic Development Corporation spoke about the Electric Supply and Demand Challenges Facing New York City.  40 people attended this first lunch and we received great positive feedback on the event and Mr. Gallagher's presentation.
